Projective Identification

Projective identification is a defence mechanism in which an individual unconsciously projects their own unacceptable thoughts, feelings, and impulses onto another person and then experiences the projected aspects as if they are coming from the other person. This can create a feedback loop, where the other person reacts to the projections, causing the original projector to react to that reaction. This can result in distorted perceptions of reality, difficulties in relationships, and problematic behaviour. Projective identification should be acknowledged and worked through in therapy to improve interpersonal relationships and overall well-being.
